CENSUS 2011 OF INDIA :


· India’s population has jumped to 1.21 billion with a decadal growth of 17.64%. Adult literacy rate increased to 74.04% with a decadal growth of 9.21%.
· The population has grown by more than 181 million during the last decade 2001-2011, according to provisional data of Census 2011 released on March 31, by the registered General and Census Commissioner of India C.Chandramouli.
· At 1.21 billion India’s population is almost equal to the combined population of Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, USA, Bangladesh and Brazil.
· This is the 15th Census of India since 1872.And it was conducted in two phases, house listing and population enumeration.
· Density of Population (number of persons per sq. km) in 2001 is 325 and in 2011 are 382.
· Densest states (number of persons per sq. km in 2011) Delhi=11297 and Chandigarh =9252.
· Least dense states (number of persons per sq. km in 2011) Arunachal Pradesh=17 and Andaman and Nicobar=46.
· Literacy rate has gone up to 74% from 65% and for males it has risen to 82% from 75% and for females to 65% from 54%. Percentage growth in literacy during 2001-2011 is 38.80%, for males 32% and for females 49%. Kerala has the highest rate of 94% and bihar lowest of 64%.
· Between 2001-2011 Delhi’s population 13.8 million to 16.8 million. 1%of India’s population lives in the capital.
